A Winter Wedding in the Rocky Mountains

On a beautiful Colorado blue sky day, these high school sweet hearts said “I do” at one of our favorite mountain venues, Devil’s Thumb Ranch.  A nature-inspired color palette of greens and creams with pops of navy blue perfectly complemented the snow covered landscape. An intimate ceremony overlooking the Continental Divide followed by a cozy reception inside the beautiful Board Axe Barn was perfectly captured by Brinton Studios.

A Whimsical Winter Wedding in the Colorado Rockies

Kristen & Sean   |   January 11th  |   Devil’s Thumb Ranch

From the bride: Winter Park has been a family vacation spot for years now, and Sean proposed to me there one year before our wedding. The two of us met in Houston after both having lived all over Texas, and we wanted to share a special place and the beauty of a Rocky Mountain winter with our Texan friends and family.

Initially, we were mostly attracted to rustic wedding trends (wood carvings, antiques, simple cake style) but we wanted to incorporate some of the strong colors and metallics featured in our home. Our main focus was to highlight the beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

I love paper products and had lots of input in the form of amateur sketches of our wedding invitations that a professional artist brought to life.

There was also a fair amount of whimsy in our faux fur stoles (a little Game of Thrones-esque) and in the forest animals featured on our wedding invitations and in golden figurines scattered amongst the décor.

Sean and I stood in front of open barn doors allowing the beauty of the mountains beyond the altar serve as the backdrop for the ceremony.

We crafted our ceremony to include both goofy and touching readings from our best friends, and the vows we wrote to one another ended up wringing out tears from many in the crowd but especially from each other.  Our music choices were especially important as they were all songs reminiscent of other important moments in our lives and relived in the happy context of our wedding.

My dad salvaged two old windows from a cabin near Yellowstone that has been in our family for generations and spent all summer prior to our wedding collecting and pressing Idaho flowers to place in the windowpanes.  We then used glass markers to make these into the seating chart.  This was my favorite detail.

For the reception, we wanted a soft, intimate ambiance. The roaring fireplace, candles, and twinkling aspen trees were exactly the lighting that created this feel.

The lit aspen trees surrounding the pillars inside the barn were cut from my parents’ yard in Denver.

For favors, we gave out chocolate and caramel covered apples from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.  A yummy choice for the end of the night!

The flowers were delicate and flawlessly arranged to intermingle with worn, gilded collectibles such as trumpets and miniature animals.

My advice: Definitely hire a wedding planner if you live at a distance – their advice from having worked for years in that city can save you a ton in time, energy, and money.  They already know which vendors are awesome, what the weather will realistically be like, and how to troubleshoot that venue if they’ve worked it many times before.

Kristen’s RECOMMENDED VENDORS

Luxe Moutain Venue, Caterer & Cake, Lodging: DEVIL’S THUMB RANCH {more info}.  A breathtaking view, indulgent food, friendly and gracious staff, and luxurious appointments.

Photographer: Brinton StudiosI would absolutely recommend CR and Tiffany Brinton – they were efficient, accommodating, unobtrusive, and produced really great results even though both Sean and I are not very comfortable in front of a camera.

Event Design & Planning, Flowers: Stacy Pisani of Alexan EventsI would absolutely recommend this group – gorgeous décor ideas, realistic options for a range of budgets, and the staff are all very friendly and readily available via email/work phone/cell phone.  They kept Sean and I on task when it came to making decisions according to a timeline throughout the many months of planning, and on the day of the wedding they arrived early and were calm and organized the entire time.  If there were any little snafus taking place, I wasn’t aware of them.

A Fall Mountain Wedding in Aspen

Amanda & Chauncey  |  September 28th  |  Aspen, Colorado

From the bride: The mountains are so beautiful and help set the mood for an extremely special and important day. I am quite traditional and wanted a lot of the traditional aspects of a wedding. Since we had it in the mountains, I wanted a bit of the rustic appeal, but nothing overboard. Because it was a fall wedding, we made sure to have the theme fit the season with a palette of fall colors.

We planned a day wedding with the ceremony and reception on top of the mountain. We followed this with an after party at the hotel. We wanted to make sure we got to spend the entire day with our friends and family as well as be able to cut a rug without any worries about obligations.

The ceremony was on the Aspen Wedding Deck on the top of Aspen Mountain. The views are gorgeous but you could not see them. We literally had rain, hail and a thunder and lightning bolt that hit 30 feet away.

We had to stop the ceremony half way through and run inside to avoid getting soaked any further.

After we ran inside to escape the storm, my husband & I spent 5 minutes collecting ourselves before we went back out to start the ceremony again. Yes, that’s hail in my veil. There may have been a shot of whiskey involved to warm us up, but this was my favorite memory of the ceremony.

We had a good friend be our officiant. He did an amazing job, twice, since we had to start over.

I loved everything except the weather. A few tears were shed, but looking back, it made for a very memorable experience.
