A Texas Meets Montana Ranch Wedding

From the photographer, Lauren Brown:  Jonas had one request for Jenny when she asked him about wedding planning. Just one. The couple lives in Austin, Texas but were getting married in Ennis, Montana where Jenny had spent so much time vacationing with her family – fishing in the summer and skiing in the winter. Jenny and her father George had taken charge of the wedding planning, and with the help of the talented team at Lukas Trudeau had put together a beautiful plan for a light and classic outdoor reception that would perch above Ennis on a high plateau and look out on the pristine Ennis Lake and surrounding mountains. Jonas’s one request was for a little piece of home, a little reminder of Austin, set to the Montana backdrop. Austin is well known for it’s music and festivals, and one of Jenny and Jonas’s favorite of these is the Austin City Limits festival, held yearly in Zilker Park near downtown. One of the hallmarks of the ACL festival is a giant picture frame, where friends meet and gather and re-orient. This is what Jonas wanted. A giant picture frame reminiscent of the one where he and Jenny so often gather with their friends. And so he built one. And perched on a plateau overlooking Ennis Lake and the surrounding valley and mountains in the distance, friends gathered and laughed and snapped photos under a giant white picture frame.

A Fun Destination Wedding in California

From the bride, Alexandra: The thing we wanted most was a fun, outdoor wedding with our closest friends and family. That’s why we opted to do a wedding weekend (Friday through Sunday) and why we chose a venue where people could also stay the night. We rented out the entire venue for three days and filled all 50 rooms and cabins with our wedding guests. A Fun Outdoor Destination Wedding A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaTHE STYLE
We have a love for both the outdoors and international travel, so we wanted that to come across in our theme. Our theme was a mix of outdoorsy/rustic, boho, romantic, and travel. We knew right away that we wanted an outdoor, mountain wedding and chose a wonderful venue where the ceremony, reception, and entire wedding weekend could be carried out under the trees and stars.

A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaTHE FLOWERS
I knew I wanted a lot of flowers and greenery to match the outdoor venue. I chose mostly peonies and other flowers that were more boho, and avoided the traditional roses. My bouquet and floral halo were a mix of pink, coral, and cream flowers.

A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaPERSONAL TOUCH
My mother, brother, and I were born in Japan. According to Japanese tradition, anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes will be granted a wish by the Gods. For the wedding, she folded 1000 origami cranes to wish Joel and me a happy marriage. We displayed the cranes at the ceremony and reception.
A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaTHE CEREMONY
The ceremony took place in a rectangular clearing in the middle of the woods. The trees lined the space and were the perfect backdrop. The arch at the front of the ceremony was made of wood and adorned with large floral bouquets. We also strung some of the origami cranes from the archway. We lined the ceremony walkway with flower petals to give a romantic feel to the space. My brother officiated the wedding and told our love story. We both wrote our own vows. Because we aren’t very religious, our vows were the longest part of the ceremony and were the most meaningful for us.

A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaTHE RECEPTION
Our reception was outdoors in a clearing right near the ceremony. Each table had lace doilies handmade by my great-grandmother and flowers matching the ones in the archways and bouquets. We also had a lot of green foliage on the tables. The tables themselves were dark wood.

A Fun Destination Wedding in California A Fun Destination Wedding in California A Fun Destination Wedding in California A Fun Destination Wedding in CaliforniaTHE TABLE NAMES & FAVORS
Joel and I have traveled to 18 countries together so far. For the names of the tables at the reception, we chose the names of some of our favorite international cities, like Paris where Joel and I got engaged. To find their table assignments, guests had to go to a table where we laid out golden compasses with the names of each guest on them. Once they found their compass, they had to open the compass to see what city they were “traveling” to. The compasses were also functional compasses and doubled as party favors.

A Rocky Mountain Wedding with a Teepee in Ridgway, Colorado

From the bride, Carey: Paul and I really wanted our wedding day to be about us and our love for each other. We’re both very introverted and planning a wedding ourselves was very stressful at times. We wanted to share our big day with family and friends because they mean so much to us, but we had to keep reminding ourselves throughout the whole process that it wasn’t about them and it wasn’t about making anyone else happy but us.
A Fall Rocky Mountain Teepee Wedding in Ouray, Colorado

WHY OURAY, COLORADO
Ouray was a special spot for both of us separately before we even started dating – I liked the hot springs and Paul loves to ice climb. I said Ouray was one of my favorite spots in my Match.com profile and he totally picked up on that. It was one of our bonding moments. Since being together we have traveled to Ouray regularly and have decided we really want to move there someday. We are currently in the process of trying to figure out how to make that work, sooner rather than later. We almost instantly agreed that it’s where we should get married. It’s such a gorgeous little mountain town and we really wanted to share it with our family and friends.

THE FIRST LOOK
The first look was so special and important for us. It allowed us to take a breath, recenter and refocus on each other, and have a really profound and beautiful moment just the two of us, before heading into the blissful revelry of the wedding.

MY ADVICE
Have fun and make it about YOU and nobody else. Don’t stress the small stuff, but do as much as you can upfront so you don’t have to run around like crazy people on the days leading up to the wedding.

A Scottish Party in the Mountains – Steamboat Springs, Colorado

From the bride, Gretchen: We wanted a Colorado casual, welcoming and fun wedding day!  Our inspiration came from the groom’s Scottish roots and the wedding locations.

A Rustic Highland Garden Wedding in Steamboat Spring Colorado

The weather was somehow perfectly glorious, like that moment with the sun rays in the beginning of the Lion King movie.

Everything about the day was personal. We deconstructed the traditional ceremony entirely and made our own. It felt very personal without being mushy. We wrote our vows together and said the same ones. I liked that because it felt traditional but personalized to us.

My favorite DIY detail from the wedding were the gold antler table settings and chandelier. The groom’s parents scored a huge lot of antlers in auction in Missouri and I spent many happy afternoons lovingly spray painting them gold. Everyone was skeptical but they looked AMAZING. We split them among the family after the wedding and they make great decorations at Christmas.

Looking back, we’ve never experienced anything like our wedding day—it is a cliché because it’s true. It was a day long adrenaline rush fueled by the biggest out pouring of love we’ve ever experienced. It rocked.

My advice: Hire a day-of wedding planner and have a clear budget.

Love at 11,444 feet

From the bride, Kaley:  Zach is originally from the East Coast and I am from the Midwest. We met in Colorado four years ago. Not only did we fall for one another, but we also fell in love with Colorado. Thus, it was important for us to have the wedding in Colorado. We wanted to share the place that we hold so dearly to our hearts with the most loved people in our lives, our guests. We chose to host a fall wedding, which is our favorite time of the year. The wedding date fell on the peak weekend of Colorado’s signature gold Aspen Tree foliage.

We had a neutral color scheme with accents of green and yellow to incorporate the earth tones of the mountain and Aspen trees.

Before the ceremony, we had our first look and read our hand written vows to one another. This allowed for intimate moments that were sacred to us. In addition, we spent time taking pictures with just the two of us before the wedding party met us. The time together eased our nerves and alleviated pressure before the ceremony as we had time to be together to show our love and appreciation for one another and reflect on the meaning of the day.

My cousins wrote and co-officiated the ceremony, which made it tremendously personal and meaningful for Zach and me. Our wedding readings were from our favorite book, The Alchemist.

The flower girls carried small boxwood wreaths.

An extra special moment was when our dear friend surprised us with the most unique 36” diameter Pin Oak wood slab monogrammed with our wedding logo. We used this as a focal creation for the décor of our reception.

Wedding Love at 11,444 in Colorado Wedding Love at 11,444 in Colorado

Instead of doing the routine order of events, we decided to mix up the order of our reception. As soon as we were announced to the guests, we went to the middle of the dance floor and cut the cake and had our first dance. After the first chorus of our first dance, we invited all guests to the dance with us. It was a huge surrounding of love. After the first dance, we jumped right into the dancing for a few songs to start the night off on the right foot. The guests seemed to really like the mix-up events.

My advice: Every wedding is beautiful and there is no wrong or right way to do it. Be true to yourselves as a couple, be mindful of the meaning of the day instead of getting lost in the details, and absorb all the love.
