Soft, Simple & Honoring at Devil’s Thumb Ranch
From the bride, K.C.:
We had guests coming from all over the country and beyond. Because people were coming so far, we wanted to offer our friends and family a Colorado experience. Devil’s Thumb Ranch definitely offered this. Additionally, the joy of a destination wedding is that people are present. They stay on the same premises for more than one day. We wanted to have time with our friends and family and a location like Devil’s Thumb Ranch made this possible!
I wanted our day to be soft, simple and honoring. Every decision, from the music to the design, were made with this in mind. I wanted everything to feel natural and organic. I also wanted the day to honor the Lord and our families. I wanted each important person to Geoff and I to be represented by something in the room. Every single person who came to our wedding received a hand written letter from my husband and I.
Each bridesmaid picked their dress of choice in gold’s, champagne’s and blushes.
We were married in front of the fireplace in front of 180 of our closest friends and family. We had a bagpiper playing music as people were seated. My cousins along with their fellow musicians played our ceremony music complete with mandolin, stand-up bass, guitar, fiddle, and banjo. They played a blue grass version of our favorite hymns.
The highlight of the ceremony was that our faith in God was honored. The importance of the promises made was not lost in the frivolous details.
For the reception, we opted to have more of a cocktail style party. We provided delicious food at stations and allowed our guests the option of moving about for seating. It worked out great, as our dance floor was full to the very end and people were able to really enjoy the evening.
Our table settings included burlap and mason jars wrapped in lace and other textures for candles. We included my great Aunt’s sheet music, which added a vintage dimension. Additionally, we stitch together doilies to cover the burlap and give the tables more texture.
Our good friend and musician played and sang our first dance on guitar to “Swept Away” by Avett Brothers, by far one of the sweetest moments of the night.
Though Geoff and I had our own small cake, our guests enjoyed treats from our mothers. My mother made her famous Derby Pies and Geoff’s mother made her famous fruit cobblers. Additionally, as party favors for all the guests, Geoff’s mother made jam from her own garden.
My advice: Don’t judge your relationship by how well you behave engaged. It is really hard to plan a wedding. Anyone that says it isn’t, is lying.
